Welcome to the inaugural Break the Silence 6K Trail Run! This event will help raise money for the Brett Schmitt Memorial Fund. The Fund was established by his family and friends in his honor at El Camino Real Charter High School, which is designed to establish a preventive program at the school to help students who may be struggling with mental illness. In addition, scholarships will be awarded to cross country and track & field athletes who may be in need of financial assistance.
Brett Schmitt was a scholar athlete who ran cross country and track at ECR, graduating in 2009. In 2008, he won the CIF Los Angeles City Section Cross Country Championship, setting a school record. In 2013, he graduated from UC Irvine with a Bachelor Degree in Business and earned his CPA certificate in February 2017. During his later college years, Brett began to suffer from mental illness and depression. On May 26, 2017, at age 25, he took his own life.
The Victory Trailhead is part of the Ahmanson Ranch trail system in the Santa Monica Mountains. It is where Victory Blvd. ends at the westernmost edge of the San Fernando Valley.
The run/walk trail loop begins at the Victory trailhead sign. While running down to a hairpin turn, you’ll see tall wheat colored rolling mountains. Turning left at the hairpin, there are great views of the Valley on your way up to Lasky Mesa. Once on the mesa, you will be on a gentle rolling path between a grass area and intermittent oak trees. Leaving the mesa, there is a long downhill which connects with the main Ahmanson trail which is a gradual uphill finish.
