Review of Surf City Marathon & Half Marathon by HB Runner

For the Half Marathon. I think this is a great race, especially considering the number of people participating. The registration process was a bit confusing with the log in and 3rd party website. The packet pick-up is crowded. But they do a good job of getting you through the line. As far as the course goes, you couldn’t ask for much more. It’s right on PCH with great views of the ocean pretty much the entire time. The only time you leave the ocean is for the “Seapoint Loop”. If you live in the area you may want to run this a few times to get used to the elevation climb. It’s fairly minimal but it’s always nice to know what’s coming ahead. I believe there was adequate aide and support on the course. There is also a good number of specatators to cheer you on. The finish line is pretty chaotic so I would suggest a predetermined meeting spot for your family and friends. The grass in front of the Hilton is a pretty good spot. The beer garden and post refreshments are good. And I always love the SWAG that comes with the race. T-shirts and medals are usually very good. If I had to give a tip it would be to hang out in the Hyatt or Hilton prior to the race. It’s warm and plenty of clean bathrooms to choose from! It’s always a race I have on my calendar every year.
