Review of Surf City Marathon & Half Marathon by dian

I loved this race. The communication during registration is straight forward and simple to understand, and everything you need to pick up your race packet is clear in the several emails they send you leading up to race weekend. Parking was a snap, with guides to point you to the right lot, and plenty of spaces were available. I took the time to look up my bib # before I went to the Expo to pick up my packet, and I was in and out in less than 10 minutes. Would have been 5 minutes, if they didn’t force you to walk through the Expo to exit, but that’s to be expected.

The half marathon course is relatively tame, with only slight inclines throughout, and you just can’t beat the view. The port-a-potties at the start were plenty, and clean. I didn’t need a bathroom stop on the course this time around, but if I did, it looked like there were plenty to choose from. Only once did I see a line, and that was 2 people waiting for one of 6 port-a-potties. Aid stations seemed to be well stocked, even for a slower runner like myself (2:30), even at later stops in the race.

Post race seems a little disorganized, but certainly not chaotic. Plenty of snacks and water available beyond the finish line. One of my favorite things about the post-race is the beer garden, which has a special fast entrance for all runners. A nice touch.

All in all, a great race, and I’ll be back next year!
