I ran this with my husband and my two tweens (9 and 11). After reading all the post-race reviews by the Phoenix runners, we were terrified that we’d have an awful time. Honestly, the race was everything the organizer’s said it would be. It lacked the finesse and genius of the Electric Run. It lacked the magnitude of the Color Run and the Color Me Rad. BUT, the glow paint worked under the black lights. There were 5 separate tents of lights and sound. The course, despite being in the very hazardous QualComm parking lot, was well marked and well lit without interfering with our glow bracelets/necklaces/belts. There was water on the course and post-race. The enthusiasm from the spectators (HEY GUYS WITH THE GIANT INFLATABLE SHARK YOU MADE OUR NIGHT!) was what I expect from San Diego runners. My children LOVED the experience. The post-race DJ party was rockin’ but we left right after our post-race pic because as my daughter said “I’m cold, I’m tired and I’m hungry Mommy”. But they had a blast. We’d run it again. I hope the race organizers continue to grow the race as I’ve watched the Color Run do.
Pre-race: Packet pick up was a breeze. In and out of Sports Authority in minutes. The cotton shirts were great and we chose to wear them that night. The COLOR stays!!! (One benefit OVER the Color Run) FOOD TRUCKS at the pre-race was a good choice! I wish I had known, we would have eaten there.
Course: Could have been AWFUL, but they did a good job of avoiding the majority of the bad parts of the parking lot, and left enough lights on to be safe. There were 5 color/party tents on the course. And the volunteers enthusiasm was awesome
Post-Race: I wish I could have stayed and partied with the SHark dudes! Who needs beer? Not San Diegans!
Overall: I had a good time, was happy to have a colorful souvenier of a tshirt and I wish the organizers the best of luck!

They did not honor the wave times that you signed up for at registration. My chosen wave time way 7:30pm but since it was a free for all, I didn’t get to cross the start until 8:45pm. This was only a tad over 2 miles. Not a true 5K. The “washable water based paint” that will come out of your clothes was in fact just plain old paint. It did not come out even a little bit and still has a faint tint in part of my hair after 6 washes. There was no beer garden as originally promised at registration. They even deny that they ever said there would be one! The after party was a DJ with dancing girls that needed to work on their beer guts. Not at all the life changing event they speak to on the website.
Worst run I have ever done, and I do a lot of these!

The only good thing about this run was that you didn’t have to pay for parking, and the volunteers were happy and encouraging. Other than that it was extremely disappointing. The run was maybe 2 miles, not 3.1. The run went through the parking lot with six 20ft long tents with black lights to run through. The music from the DJ wasn’t set up through the entire run, there were only speakers at the tents. The after “party” was no party at all. Not enough food trucks. The dance area was right next to the start, so there was no separating the two which killed the vibe. Beer should not be necessary for a race, and I understand wanting to have a family atmosphere, but the neon run really needed, an at least segregated, beer garden. The whole experience didn’t come anywhere close to what was promised on the website. I won’t recommend it to anyone.

I am writing in regards to last nights Neon Run (4/13/13) in San Diego, Ca. I have many complaints, the first being that the” 5k” that some people paid a lot of money for( $22-60), was not a 5K at all. They promise and advertise that the run is a 3.1 mile run, when it is a horrible 2 mile loop around a parking lot. Secondly, there was a planned ” party” at the end of the run…. 3 food trucks, 3 booths, horrid go go dancers and no beer (the least of the worries, but was originally promised), is hardly constituted as a good time for 20 people, let alone the 10,000 supposed runners there last night. I was extremely disappointed with this run. I do not recommend it for anyone …. Not worth the money or the time.
