Run Like It’s Recess 5K

Join us for the “Run Like It’s Recess” 5K Run/Walk, 1K Kids Fun Run, and 50-yard Toddler Run! This annual event is hosted by Newcomb Academy PTSA, which serves Newcomb Academy (Grades K – 8), a public school in the Long Beach Unified School District. It’s a school fundraiser and is also a way to promote health and fitness to our children and families. All ages and fitness levels are welcome!

THE COURSE: Flat, fast, and scenic. It takes place at El Dorado Park East in Long Beach, near the train and playground area. If you’re looking to set a PR (personal record) or if your goal is just to finish, this is the perfect course.

Review

I love this race! I am the race director for this event. I would love this event if I were not affiliated with it. I started this event to raise money for my kids school, but the number 1 objective was to have an event that the whole family would enjoy. We have a kids area and 3 race distances. A 5k, 1k and a 50 yard waddle. Very fun!

Review

I wanted to like this race a lot but there was one major issue. First off the race map that was posted onthe website was incorrect. Having never run there, I studied the map so I’d know where I was going. However, the race wasn’t even on the side of the park that was shown on the map, there were no course markers anywhere, no lead bike and only half of the turnoffs had a course worker telling you which way to go. Also, there were only a handful of serious runners so huge gaps developed and at times there was no one in sight in front of me so that I could follow and not get lost. The course ended up following the main loop on the road but on the map online it showed it going to the right side of the park but it actually wound left so I kept thinking at some point we would turn off to cross over. The course is the number one thing I look for in a race so that was really a negative. Everyone was friendly and registration was easy and VERY Cheap, which is a huge bonus. Also awards were nice. The restroom situation was pretty bad. There was just the standard park bathroom that only has two stalls, a few port-o-potties would have been much needed. Since we were at a park, it would have been nice to run on the grass and not just the main car road most of the time. I think this race has potential to be really good and it’s only like the third year so hopefully it will improve.

very flat and easy loop course through el dorado park.

you get a nice backpage/bag, plus free pancakes afterwards, plus crafts for the kids in addition to the customary shirt so this race is a great value, especially for being a relatively small 5k. All the normal things like official times and age group medals but in the first two years it was mostly locals and people associated with Newcomb (lb public school it benefits) that show up so better than normal chance to place in your age group

a good kids run as well – every kid gets a medal and some time in the bounce house.

you can park at the start finish line BUT you need to pay the $5 or $7 park entry fee to do so. you can park on the streets for free in the neighborhood on wardlow between the park and Studebaker for free, then you have a less than half mile jog warm up over to the start line or you can easily bike there, it is right off the san gabriel river bike trail.
