PR Fast. Fast course plus fast runners makes for a fast run.
One of the consistent PR courses for many of the folks we run with.
Per results, 730 runners with over 100 under 19; including the nation’s fastest 50+ (Pete Magill) and some blazing performances from under-18s.
The course is flat and simple: 1-mile loop, 1-mile out-and-back, 1-mile loop.
The pre- and post-race area is hoppin’ for such a small race.
The pace was BLISTERING in the front of the race – with 50 of us ticking through the 1/2 mile under the 5-minute pace – and well ahead of our paces, but pushed by a huge crowd of fast runners.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED if you are looking for fast and fun.

The turnout for the 2012 Magic Shoe 5k was incredible. The winning time was 14:21 on a USA T&F sanctioned course. Pete Magill set an new American record of 15:05 for the road 5k (for over 50 yo’s) …and 20 runners broke 16 minutes! While I was quite a ways back at 19:11, it was still very motivating to witness all of the excellent performances. I especially enjoyed the section of the race where you encounter the race leaders after their first 1.5 miles.

This year the Magic Shoe is part of the USATF Grand Prix Road Running Series and offers prize money for the top overall Men’s and Women’s finishers. The race is run on one of the fastest 5K loops, so come prepared to set your PR here. Coach Sumner puts on a first rate event with the support of the Cynthia Holcomb Foundation, Corona del Mar High School, and the local community. An excellent cause, a fast course for your PR, prize money to the top runners, a great party atmosphere, nice weather, and great people = A can’t miss racing event!

Magic Shoe is a super fast course, and the race also has a higher social purpose…so I try to run in it every year! Bring your old, but miodestly worn shoes so that they can be donated to those less fortunate. This race provides athletic shoes to thousands of under-privileged children and adults every year. It miakes you feel good about helping others, and you can often score another 5K PR!
