Did this race as my 2nd 1/2 in 2012. The bib pick up was easy, but there was a lot of traffic going into La Jolla on a weekend. The expo was weak. The course was tough. It was hill after hill and the Torrey Pines climb was rough but beautiful. You certainly need to train running uphill for this one. The smell of fish at the end of the course wasn’t pleasant either after running through all those hills!
The beer fest took awhile to get into. The shuttle back to Del Mar took forever to get on and it took an hour to drive back. Sitting on a shuttle for that long after this race was not fun.
Overall, the course was very challenging and I would do it again.

Love this race, but not for the faint of heart. It’s hard and not recommended for a first timer. I always carry my own fluids at this one. The traffic and shuttles at the end really need help. Getting out of La Jolla is difficult at best. As a local, love it, because I know what I’m getting into and the scenery can’t be beat.

Great course. Yes, the “expo” is really lame and the traffic to get to it sucks because parking is very hard to find in La Jolla on a Saturday afternoon. For a race of this size, there is no excuse to have such a minor league expo. The buses to get to the start were orderly and easy to use Just be sure to get there early. It would be good if they had something by the start line while we were waiting for the race to start, but that is minor. The climb up Torrey Pines Rd. Is tough but the hill near the end (coming up into downtown La Jolla) was even harder for me because it is so late in the race. After the climb up Torrey, though, the downhills are awesome and with great views! Great beer garden after the race and a very nice finish area. Pretty easy to get out of there after the race, at least for me. Volunteers are very helpful and friendly. A great experience!

The course is worth the race. The organizers though have no excuse for everything otherwise though. Support on the course was good. Not sure why San Diego has such trouble with traffic for these smaller races. This one starts at the fair grounds so they should be able to get people in easily. Expo is weak. The shirt is a joke and the medal is OK. They race always sells out so they should be able to produce a better product.
Route is awesome. Tough hill in Torrey Pines. Nice strip on the beach before you get to the hill and ends in La Jolla. If you haven’t run the race, I would recommend it for the course alone, but that’s it.

I LOVE this race. It is a very challenging course with some intense uphills and downhills. The torrey pines climb of 420′ is a beast but once you get to the top and head down into La jolla the views are absolutely stunning. This is a course I recommend to everyone to do at least once!
There are plenty of aid stations, but I will say the course does get a little bit lonely since its not a great spectators course. The expo is really sad. Its in a grass field at a school with maybe 10 booths. Nothing special at all plus one of the only half marathons I have ever been to where they give a cotton T 🙁
