This race is always well organized, family friendly, and has a great course. There is music at the beginning and end of the race as well as an expo. This race is good for both competitive runners as well as people who are just kicking off their running season. By participating in the race you are also supporting the Kevin Cook foundation which is a great cause!

This is a great race at the still developing Orange County Great Park in Irvine. They had music before and after the race along with a decent expo which included massages and food + everyone that finishes got a medal. The course went out on the old airplane runways which was cool and was really flat so the times were fast. All the proceeds went to high school students as well. Good race for a great cause.

As a high school Cross Country Coach, I find the Spirit Run to be an excellent way to start off the season for any program. It is an introductory type course that is great for new athletes to get one of there first 5K experiences as well as a way to get veterans back into race pace at the beginning of the season. Throughout the event there are many other running related affairs going on that are provided. From free massages, running apparel at great prices and great Post-race food there are many things to keep you occupied before and after your races. Another plus is that the cost to bring a team is always kept inexpensive. Add on that they have inexpensive “Open” races for adults AND children and its a day that any and everyone can enjoy. Did I mention everyone who completes the course gets a medal? Best of all the entire event is done as a memorial for a local runner, Kevin Cook, and all the proceeds go towards Scholarships for graduating Seniors. Add this all together and you’ve got one of the best early season events in Orange County. I have been attending with my team for several years and will continue as long as it’s available.

Kevin Cook Spirit Run is an amazing cause that preserves the memory of a young man who was not only an athlete but an outstanding citizen as well. It also provides scholarship opportunities and grant money for Cross Country teams. The Great Park venue is a great course to jump start the season! There is entertainment and vendors and lots of room to roam around. Parking is also a plus…lots of it! My family has participated in the Spirit run for the past four years and look forward to participating for many more! Come on out this year and give it a try, run, walk, enjoy the park, you wont be disappointed!

Kevin Cook Spirit Run is a great cause, but the course last year was not good for two counts: 1) it was not a true 5K, it was measured short and could have easily been extended to cover the full 5K; 2) running a 5K race on a tarmac is simply not very interesting, I liked it better when it was in Mile Square Park! However, Kevin Cook seemed to be a fine young man, and I would probably do it again….in his honor:)
