Race the setting sun over Castro Peak on the epic 14-mile Bulldog loop in reverse or take on the fast, action-packed 4-mile course around Malibu Creek. This event takes place in the afternoon and carries on through a Santa Monica Mountain sunset with post-race beer garden celebrations, a delicious dinner meal with plant-friendly options, and certified sports massage and bodywork by the Vision For Enrichment team.

Review

The XTERRA races are always great and this one is no exception. The 22K is really tough — the word I used was “grueling” — but absolutely gorgeous. Stunning. Registration was a breeze and packet pick up was available the day before (at the “Malibu Adventure Games”) and the day of the race. As with any race, arriving early is a good idea to get rock star parking and have short lines for packet pickup and bathrooms. I liked the green tech tee they gave out in 2012 with the course map on the back! The new partnership with Dos Equis is a great idea … LOVED tossing back a couple of cold ones right after finishing. What a wonderful morning.

Xterra Malibu Creek

The course is beautiful with views of the ocean and hills at Malibu Creek Canyon. The course is challenging with plenty of ups and downs.

I had to rate the prerace low because there was no toilet paper in any of the bathrooms. Big oversight.

The aid stations were well placed and had both water and Gatorade.

The post race food is usually very good at the Xterra races but I was too slow and by the time I finished there were just a few eggs left.

I enjoyed the race very much.

Another great Xterra event. Small in size but very well run and organized. This course is a standout. They offer a 6K and a 22K. I had some friends new to trail running that did the 6K and now they’re hooked. The 22K is a challenge! But all your hard work is worth it after you get to see those incredible views! Very good event…
