A brutal back country trail run with the most epic views…

Back for year two!! Modified format trail racing. Sign up. Run, hike, or race the course AT YOUR CHOOSING from Saturday, July 25th to Sunday, August 16th. Submit results by 8pm.

Featuring a modified 25k for solo runners or 2-person teams; a 5.3-mile solo option, and the Mugu Peak Vertical Mile challenge.

All runners get hooked-up goodie bags mailed to them.

This is an unsupported race with minimal course markings and without aid stations.
We highly recommend running early in the morning to beat the heat and avoid the crowds.

25k Solo

The 25k Solo Run has it all from single-track climbing up the famous Ray Miller Trail, to fire roads traversing ridges of the northern-most Santa Monica Mountains, ocean views from mountainside trails, the steep climb up Mugu Peak, and its demanding descent.

This course is for experienced runners comfortable with a 15-mile, backcountry, trail run covering over 2,500 feet in elevation with technical sections in the summer heat.

50k Team

The 50k Team Run combines the miles of each 2-person team! Turn the 25k course into an adventure run. Bring you’re A-game and be ready to provide more than just moral support. Teams of two runners take on the course and increase safety, help with directions, pacing, fueling, and motivation. Teams must start and finish together.

Suggested for runners that expect to finish after 2-hours 30-minutes.

1st place teams for each category win a creative, hand-crafted Tough Mugu piece of art for each team member.

Team categories are: Male, Female, Co-Ed, Generational (Mother/Daughter or Father/Son).

5-Mile Solo

The 5-mile Solo Run is not without its challenges! Experience the beautiful Ray Miller Trail and it’s ocean views leading up to mountain vistas. Runners climb to the highest point above the trail to see Sycamore Canyon lead inland, before dropping back onto the Ray Miller Trail for 2.6 miles of gracious switchbacks. This 5.3-mile course has roughly 1,000’ of vertical gain and loss.

1-Mile Vert Challenge

Accumulate a full vertical mile on the Tough Mugu Peak Challenge course.

With a half-mile approach from the Pacific Coast Highway, step up to the steepest section of the Tough Mugu 25k course.

This 1.6-mile loop has a 375’ climb that will test your strength in the first half mile. Complete 20 miles in 12 loops and climb one full vertical mile!!

This challenge does not need to be completed in one day. Runners submit their times to the RD after each run.

The Results

Runs must be completed from Saturday, July 25th to Sunday, August 9th and results submitted before 8pm on August 16th through

25k Solo/Team & 5-Mile:
After completing your run, click “Record Results” on the Tough Mugu ultrasignup page, answer the questions when prompted, enter your total time from start to finish (elapsed NOT moving).

1-Mile Vert:
Please email each run to info@toughtopanga with the subject “Tough Mugu Peak Challenge”. Please include the run data from your run app, including course map, elapsed time, mileage, vert, and date of run.

The Trail Challenge

1. Start with the Tough Topanga 10k in June
2. Work your way up to the Tough Mugu 25k
3. Get a finish at the Bulldog Ultra 50k on September 19th.

Earn the limited edition Trail Challenge jacket when you complete all three events in one year!!
